MY 4TH GREAT GRANDFATHER, JOHN, ”HOG MY CATS”, BOWLES(1802-1859) and HIS FAMOUS SHOTGUN
Yes, Hog My cats…. apparently church sanctioned curse words, no shit. He was quite the character in Texas history, apparently. Story goes, around 1856, while rounding up horses that Comanches had released from their pens in hopes of stealing. He saw He saw the three Comanche, about 50 feet away, walking single file on the bank of the Sabinal River. Now, having ran out in dead of night to capture the horses, he and his sons were dressed only in nightshirts and barefoot. John had left his sons to guard the horses, and had positioned himself under a tree on the other side of the river, with his shotgun and a six shooter. Blammm! Went one barrel of that shotgun. One Comanche fell, and the other two disappeared into the brush, not to be seen again til morning, when, 30 feet away, the second one was found, with shotgun pellets in the bowels. The third was tracked almost five miles away, where he too was found to have expired from John Bowles lethal shotgun blast. In all, three men were killed with one blast of a shotgun, a feet likely unmatched, at least in Texas History.
Don’t worry, the Comanche got their revenge a couple years later, at least on John “Hog My cats” Bowles….. but that is a story for another day.
